Mrs. Abha Bahadur

Mrs. Abha Bahadur is Founder President of a not- for- profit, non- governmental organization, Centre for Water, Sanitation and Health for Women, registered under the Societies Registration Act No. XXI of 1860 of Delhi in November 2014. It was empanelled as a Key Resource Centre under Swachh Bharat Mission – Gramin by Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Govt. of India, in July 2017. Subsequently her organization has supported Govt. of Uttar Pradesh to verify and evaluate toilets constructed in declared open- defecation free district of Gautam Buddh Nagar in Uttar Pradesh. She has organized CLTS trainings of swachhagrahis in Gorakhpur district in U.P. in 2018 to bring about behavior change in the community in rural areas towards use of toilets. Besides 15 CAS+ five day trainings of swachhagrahis (village motivators) were coordinated by her in two districts of Rajasthan­ Dholpur and Sawai Madhapur in 2019 in order to achieve open- defecation free villages.

Mrs. Bahadur has organized workshops on safe drinking water and handwashing practices amongst students in different schools in Delhi so that they can imbibe hygienic practices and act as change-agents in society. For easy, affordable and practical solutions to many problems of personal feminine hygiene and health of girls and to promote safe sanitation, she got installed and maintained sanitary napkin vending machines and incinerators in schools and colleges and provided hygienic sanitary napkins as well in different states of north India. She has also conducted training workshops on feminine hygiene in colleges.

Till 2012, Mrs. Bahadur was Senior Vice-President of Sulabh International Social Service Organization, a well-known NGO in the sanitation sector in India, where she worked for over two decades in various capacities. She contributed towards human rights of scavengers in India, majority of whom are women. She has also helped towards improved access to sanitation facilities through advocacy of sustainable sanitation technologies in conferences in many countries worldwide. Mrs. Abha Bahadur represented Sulabh at the United Nations for many years and participated in its meetings in New York, Geneva and Lisbon. She was also Member of WSSCC Global Sanitation Fund Committee for India. She has been Member of various Committees of CII and FICCI. She was also Chairperson of Sulabh Public School, New Delhi, in which quality English medium education was imparted to children from poor, down­ trodden and marginalized communities.

Mrs. Abha Bahadur is the recipient of “2002 World Human Rights Promotion Award” by All India Institute of Human Rights and “Iconic Women Creating A Better World for All” by Women Economic Forum in December 2019.
